Media Center

The media center is the heart of our literacy program.  With over 10,000 selections to choose from, students and staff have the world at their fingertips.  We also have computers for student use before and after school, computer carts for classroom use, big books and trade books for classroom instruction, and even a birds-eye view of the eagle’s nest.  We also have a working television studio where students in grades 4 & 5 run the morning news show.

Families can research and play educational games from the home page of Destiny, our computerized card catalog system.  Also, viewing what is available in our collection can also be done right from the comfort of your home.  Students may also checkout any of the currently-purchased digital titles in the collection.

Students in grades K-2 will get to listen to new selections from the Florida Association of Media Educators (FAME) in the Sunshine State Young Readers Award, Jr. book program, as well as titles from the Florida Reading Association (FRA).  They can earn participatory awards by completing books projects and/or Thinking Maps to retell the stories.  This year’s titles can be viewed by clicking on the tabs to the left.

As developing readers, students in grades 3-5 independently read titles from FAME in the SSYRA book program.  Afterwards, students will complete their own Thinking Maps and/or book projects in order to participate in an end-of-year activity.  Also, students in the intermediate grades can participate in the district-wide Battle of the Books competition in the spring of each year.  This year’s titles can be viewed by clicking on the tabs to the left.
